Lucas Luhr and John Edwards endured a difficult weekend in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship at VIR, after a loose wheel and a pitstop penalty early in the race.
The #100 BMW Team RLL pair started the all-GT race from fifth with Edwards at the wheel, but had slipped back to seventh when the right-rear wheel became detached on lap 13.
The team’s bad luck was then compounded when Edwards was hit with a drive-through penalty for a pit infringement, which meant Luhr took over the car at half distance already a lap down.
With no caution periods until the final few minutes of the race, the 2011 FIA GT1 World Champion was starved of options to get back into the race through strategy calls and duly finished eighth.
Luhr will hope for a return to the form that saw the #100 BMW M6 GTLM score a first podium at Lime Rock when the series visits the Circuit of the Americas in Texas on September 17.
He said: “It was another very frustrating race for us in the #100 car, but it can only get better from here. Our race was more or less over when John came in on three wheels at the beginning of the race. We do not know exactly what happened but we will analyse our data. From there on, we went a lap down but kept on pushing until the end. See you in Texas.”
